“(I didn’t choose Malawi) Malawi chose me.” Madona
Although the words are some what corny , they do have something about them. Malawi is a poor country financially, with few resources and thus nothing to fight over. Socially it is a rich and abundant country. And although the question “What’s in it for “WE” is slowly being replaced by “What’s in it for “ME”, it is still a warm and friendly place. People have a genuine interest in you and your life and what is beyond their experience. So the question is given: Why we should help these people?
Beyond the altruistic “…because we can…” the biggest reason is that you can have a positive impact on a persons life for the cost of a coffee. A long term effect (6 months) for the cost of an Iphone and on and on it goes. The idea is send a little get a lot in return. What do you get back? The satisfaction that you made a difference in someones life, an impact on another human being – you made a difference. They are potentially alive today , educated and clothed because of you.
My out look is and Voice can be heard saying : Less technology and more humanity. It is a paradox because in order for us to be aware of what is going on in the world we need thee technology. Weird but true.
So despite all that ails the country of Malawi, they maintain that humanity, that social structure that we have lost so long ago. I always thought that the Movie Crocodile Dundee was a little fake when Dundee was in New York City saying “Good Day” to everyone. Why would he do that? These are strangers to him. What are the odds of seeing these people again? It didn’t really matter to Dundee as it was the right thing to do, socially. Malawi has that same feeling.
Don’t make them like us, just help with the basics. Shelter, food, clean water, an education that is not born from a Western European perspective and finally, to learn from Malawi what we have lost in our lives.
That to me, is the Why.
