This is one of those times in life where I am truly impressed. Chance has really taken the ball (so to speak) and run with it. I will be spending 3 short months in Africa and it appears that …it might not be enough time. Time goes too quickly sometimes and with the amount of work and effort that goes into a trip , I think that it will all disappear too fast. But ….I will soon find out. Here is a picture that Chance recently sent me from a camera I sent him. It has been a steep learning curve for Chance who has been working on discovering the potentials and complexities of the laptop I sent over to him. It hasn’t been easy but he has been learning little by little. Sometimes I wonder if it is a good thing or not. We have so much in our lives that clutter our days that they seem to take the joy out of the life we should have. The more you have, the more you worry, seems to hold true. Or you have so much “stuff” you have to hire people to look after it for you. Which means that you still won’t enjoy “it” as much as you should have, because you have too many things dividing your attention.

Oh well glad that I don’t have that to worry about!…

Enjoy.

Did you know that once Airline tickets are purchased they are non-refundable? I didn’t, even though I don’t leave for another 6 months. So yes, the project is a go (did you have any doubts) and now my biggest challenge is luggage. The limits and restrictions are mind boggling to co-ordinate from one carrier to another. Carry on luggage is NOT standardized at all! Nor are the weight limitations. One carrier will allow two bags while the next will only allow one – it’s crazy. Charging for food , extra bag (or sometimes even checking in single a bag) and the list goes on.

So I leave …April 1st,2012. No really I do….No look I have the ticket right here…….ARG!

Got more batteries for it (they are really tiny too!) and I think that I am pretty much set for the whole thing – with the exception of rain cover for it. But I am going in the dry season so it shouldn’t be a problem…..right????

I know I can do this on my own but to have someone come with me that really knows what he/she is doing and is keen on the project is a huge bonus. Will have some stats for you soon and we will be doing this one way or the other. Also I would really love to raise the bar for the choirs and get some money flowing to the local communities. So excited. So very very excited. Oh and look to the bottom of the page – the clock is ticking…

Hello,

Chance again. I just briefly introduced myself in the last document. I will tell you little by little of myself. I was born at St Johns hospital situated east of Mzuzu City. Our family used to live at the location called Masasa in the same city. Later in time the family moved to Chibavi township where they established themselves. Some Grasss-thached huts were constructed for the family which exist even today. My parents sent me to Katoto Primary School and later i was selected to Katoto Secondary School. The schools are just at the core of the City along the MainRoad 1 as we go to Lilongwe [CapitalCity]. For me to be who I am today, my mother used to brew beer known as Kachaso. This is a strong spirit gin that most poor people take as beer. I could pass with flying coulors at shool but with empty stomach in most cases. Life is tough and soft to many, with me ,am yet to choose which side i belong to. The fear of the Lord is the begining of Wisdom; very real indeed. When i was introduced to Sunday school by the same parents, i realized that i could do most of the things that other people do. Singing came to be my most favorite career to be achieved. On and on until when the Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango identified me as the great asset of the church. He picked me to sing with him in the bigger group that he was leading representing the Synod of Livingstonia. With the group, I have done many shows such as singing on the National Day Of Worship organized by the state and churches council in Malawi. I have traveled in and outside Malawi with the sponsorship of well wishers. I wonderfully compose songs. The songs for the Cross Melodies Choir recorded by my friend Peter were humbly composed and arranged by me as then i was very active with the group. I ask you to listen to them on www.voicesformalawi.com and leave your idea. Peter is the big man behind all what i can call the first recording for me to be heard by you. Until your comment, i pause here for now.

Now slowly and slowly get to know real pericopes of my life as i update you with every newly discovered information.

MPATA
This is a place of history situated west of Karonga District cemtre, about 15km away.
Lovely,

Chance.

I am very grateful to my friend Peter for recognizing the work I did when he was doing his documentation in Malawi. I am studying theology currently at the University of Livingstonia (in Mzuzu). I am the Theological Student representative to the student body. I am also the University Music director. The great interest so far is in doing cultural music which with support from friends here, is in the move. The college am at is situated 20km north of the city of Mzuzu along the main road to Karonga. Too much of everything is poisonous. You will get to learn more of me and Mzuzu (the) city and possibly about Unilia (University of Livingstonia) in the next document. For the moment you are free to comment on what you would think i should be enlightening you with from this side of life. You can notify Peter or myself. Your newly introduced pal,

…well let me tell you a little story first.

For all this drama to happen with Voices and how I got interested in doing what I am doing, there was a beginning, and his name was Chance Mwangomba. Chance was the person that I asked if I could “record the choir” that started all this.

Now communication to Malawi is sketchy at best sometimes and of course the Internet is still relatively expensive for people there, so when Chance gave me his email address and then I tried to get a hold of him when I got back and got a little sorted, the address was invalid. So how do you reconnect? I have tried on and off over the past few years and to no avail, until the other day – when I got an email from Chance.

To say that I was thrilled would be an understatement, and I am still really jazzed about it. Now if you want to see WHO I am talking about then just watch Voices the movie and he is the choir master in the first group. And oh what a beautiful voice he has.

Thanks to you Chance, for making my day a brighter one and inspiring me to something more. Your timing couldn’t have been better either as I will be seeing you with in a year!

This is soooo exciting !!!.

Ok so here it is. I have gone to the “Dark Side” ( I am an Audio Guy by profession) and bought a Video Camera. This is what it looks like.

It is a pretty camera with nice BIG newly developed three x 1/2 inch type Exmor™ CMOS sensors. Each with an effective pixel count of 1920 x 1080, which produces images in FULL HD resolution. The low-light capabilities of the sensors will be of particular use in Malawi with limited power and light at night. This is Sony’s first tape-less professional video camera that uses memory cards. The camcorder records to Express 3/4 cards and since I got some handy adapters I can now use SDHC cards as well! Weird – NO TAPE! It can switch between 1080i and 720P with multiple frame recording capability such as 50i, 59.94i , 50 P and native, 25P, 29.97p and 23.97p. So memory cards, full HD 1080P ,a really nice lens to it and it weighs in at 6 pounds. I have shot some simple stuff with it and it does take some getting use to. It will be a bit of a challenge with the end results being pretty amazing footage. I look forward to shooting in Malawi with this one. And of course it has independent audio inputs if I want to use them.

Well it looks like I will be traveling in either October or November of next year. Still so many things to sort out and get. I did however pick up one major component – a very Nice Sony HD pro camera. Fully digital with NO tapes to worry about. Memory is another issue but nothing a few Terabytes won’t fix. It seems weird spending all this money when I could be doing more with it in Malawi, it is however , a means to end. It is the only way that I will be able to share and show you what is going on over there. It is a complex and very fragile economy and a very traditional yet changing culture. Much to do anmd many things to prepare for. Oh and we have reached the $2300 mark…..Thanks everyone!
